Shen Goes Gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness!

Today many more students, staff, and administrators are aware of the devastating effects of childhood cancer as they wear gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness month.

Dr. Oliver Robinson, Superintendent of the Shenendehowa School District has chosen the 3rd Wednesday of September to recognize Childhood Cancer Awareness month on an annual basis. Megan DeLaRosa the president of STA (Student Teacher Association) has been very supportive of this endeavor along with Ann Frantti, past principal of Orenda Elementary School and current board member of Nick’s Fight to be Healed Foundation, and the CSEA.

Nick and Luke remembered for their strength and courage during their battles with cancer.

Don Flynt, principal at Shen’s High School East and president of SAA (Shenendehowa Administrators Association) has always been supportive of Nick’s Round Table and the local families whose children have dealt with cancer. He is currently working the the teen group to implement a Cancer Awareness Tree near the current memorial garden so that anyone can remember and honor their friends and families who have been affected by cancer.

Entrance to the garden

As everyone looks out at the Memorial Garden they will see gold ribbons adorning the entrances and photos of local children who have battled cancer and won, are still fighting or have passed away from the disease. Within the garden are photos of Nick Cammarata who passed away in October of 2008 and Luke Romano who passed away in 2011.

Childhood cancer causes tremendous, life-long negative effects on everyone involved and our purpose is to make that journey easier. Having the community involved to support our families, makes their lives better and fills them with hope.

Ben Mayo, a current Shen senior has beat cancer and gives back to help others.

Thank you to everyone who has helped raise awareness and to the Shenendehowa administration and staff for empowering our youth to make a difference and voice their concerns about childhood cancer.
Many students are wearing gold shoelaces and athletic teams like the Shen Boys & Girls Soccer team, Shen Volleyball team and others are wearing gold to show their support.

If your team or club is wearing gold shoelaces, please send a photo to and it will be added to Nick’s Fight to be Healed Foundation Facebook page.
